Summary

At the foot of the Matterhorn, Europe’s most iconic mountain, Zermatt offers more than just picture postcard views. Sitting beside the Italian border, Zermatt is German-speaking. The village has retained much of its traditional feel whilst offering all of the modern comforts today's skier would wish for. Almost a third of the Alps’ 4,000m+ peaks are located in this area, adding to the jaw dropping mountain scenery and providing a playground for both winter and summer.

Access

No cars are allowed into Zermatt – other than the electric milkfloats which ferry visitors around the resort.

Winter

Fine dining both on and off the mountain, 394km of pistes and extensive off-piste terrain puts Zermatt amongst the world's top winter destinations. The skiing caters for all levels split over 3 distinct ski areas. The connection to Cervinia, over the Italian border, allows for pasta lunch or a quick panini on more gentle slopes.

Summer

Zermatt is popular with mountaineers all year round. Since British climber, Edward Whymper's, ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 it has held a fascination for climbers. The hiking is stunning through a landscape shaped by glacial action and running water. Leisure activities aren't restricted to the outdoors; Zermatt hosts two well-regarded music festivals.

Property Market

Of all the Swiss ski resorts, Zermatt's rules for property purchase foreign buyers are the most restrictive. This looks unlikely to change and for now there are limited opportunities. The result is high prices, but also the knowledge of owning a property in one of the world's most desirable locations.
