Is Val d'Isere Set to Become Europe's Best Ski Resort?

Already one of the favourite ski resorts in Europe for both winter visitors and ski property owners, recent investment into the infrastructure of the pistes, chairs and village in Val d'Isere shows that the infamous Espace Killy ski resort is doing everything it can to keep up with the demands of skiers and move into the future.

What has Val d’Isere done so far?

In the past 2 years, €16 million has been invested to update the Solaise area of the Espace Killy ensuring skiers are offered an improved ski experience. The Solaise gondola has been completely transformed, increasing passenger capacity by 40% (pushing it up to 3,600 passengers per hour) as well as the installing the added luxuries of free wifi and heated seats.

There is a new beginners area covered with magic carpets perfect for families and a day lodge with picnic areas and a café where you can grab a coffee and croissant for the bargain price of €2.50 – quite a feat in any French ski resort let alone one as popular as Val d’Isère.

What plans do Val d’Isere have for the future?

Following this investment on the mountain, the next focus will be on the ski resort itself. A €200 million investment in the heart of the village will add 900 extra beds, brand new chalets and two new hotels. This 5-year project will be called ‘Le Coin de Val’. A new ski piste will be created directly into the centre of the resort, and an underground moving walkway will take skiers back to the ski lifts. The new piste ensures much of the accommodation in the new development will be ski in-ski out, a privilege which will extend to some of the existing buildings in the area.

Initial work will begin in Autumn 2017 with the demolition of some buildings on the edge of the ski resort, and construction will commence in May 2018 with a new bus station, childcare facility and tourist office which will open in the winter of 2018/19. 

A new vision for Val d’Isere?

A spokesperson for the new development has said that the resorts new vision will encourage various businesses to “adapt to requirements and expectations of the 21^st century client without deviating from the authenticity that is loved by Val d’Iseres wider permanent population and its yearly visitors”. By modernising the ski resort, whilst at the same time embracing the traditional values of the village, Val d’Isère has ensured its place as one of the most popular ski resorts in the French Alps and beyond for years to come.
