Summary

Perched high atop the cliffs of Morzine in the Porte du Soleil, Avoriaz is a vision straight out of a sci-fi novel. From afar the angular modernist buildings could be carved into the rock and appear to blend into the surrounding mountains. The car-free streets are actually pistes, and the only mode of transport other than skis are the horse pulled carriages that roam the village.

Geneva is just a 1hr45 drive away, and Chambery is 2 hours away.

Winter

Sitting in the middle of one of the largest ski areas in the world, from Avoriaz you have access to 650km of piste, and endless off-piste to explore. Modern lifts and snow-sure slopes take you through some of the most stunning scenery in France, with panoramic views of the Dents du Midi and Dents Blanches. The terrain offers so much variety and there is something for every ability and interest to explore. The Stash, the world’s biggest freeride ‘piste’ was voted the best ski run in the world in 2014, and there are 80 obstacles for riders of all levels to attempt. To the left of the resort towards the Chavanette sector is the Swiss Wall – a run which frequently features on “World’s Most Dangerous Ski Runs” lists. The overall skiing here is very family friendly, and there is guaranteed snow cover from December to April – in face just a few years ago it had the most snowfall in the Alps. There are also plenty of non-skiing activities (such as the Aquariaz water park) and annual music festivals which take over the pistes and the resort centre every March.

Summer

Famous for its downhill mountain biking, Avoriaz is also great for rock climbing, hiking, golfing, horse-riding and paragliding. They also operate the ‘Village des Enfants’ for kids from the ages of 3-16. Concentrating on sports, nature and the mountains, it is a program run by physical education teachers with an emphasis on outdoor learning.
