Summary

Jackson has become one of the most famous resorts for back country enthusiasts and powder hounds. Although it has gained a huge following as a free-rider paradise, the isolation and distance from any major city has meant that the crowds are few and far between. The lack of people has also contributed to the sense of remoteness – it is not unusual to see elk and moose lurking around the mountains, or even the occasional bear. Teton Village, at the base of the main cable car is a charming little town and you can get pretty much everywhere on foot. There are plenty of restaurants, and the surrounding areas make you feel as though you have stepped into a Wild West film. Though the rich and famous would traditionally head to resorts such as Aspen, the popularity of resorts like Jackson Hole are on the up and property values are steadily increasing.

Access

There are no direct flights to Jackson from the UK, so the most popular option is to fly to Denver airport and transfer. Many American airlines are increasing the number of flights to Jackson during the winter season, so access is getting easier and easier.

Winter

Jackson Hole has always marketed itself an experts’ playground – and it is, but there is plenty for intermediate riders too. In fact, half of the 139 runs within the boundaries of the resort are classified as beginner or intermediate, though it is expert riders who will really find their groove here. Jackson’s signature chutes are world famous and the bowls between the two mountains of Rendezvous and Apres Vous are the stuff steep skiers dream of. Hobacks, off the back of Rendezvous is a huge area devoted to ungroomed terrain. This used to be the jewel in Jackson’s crown until 1999 when the resort decided to put in gated entrances at the top of Rendezvous mountain opening up more than 3000 acres of backcountry terrain in Bridger Teton National Forest.

Summer

Most ski resorts in the USA have a bustling summer season too – and Jackson Hole is no different. As a southern gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the summer activity opportunities are endless. Scaling mountains, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, white water rafting, paragliding and even golfing are all on offer.
