Summary

Once a traditional farming village, Saas Fee has established itself as one of Switzerland’s premier resorts. Sitting at an altitude of 1800m amongst towering mountains, glaciers and thirteen of the alps 4000m peaks, the skiing here is some of the most stunning in the world. Often compared to Zermatt, Saas Fee is a year-round family friendly destination. The farming origins are still evident, and the narrow streets of the charming town are lined with ancient chalets, old barns and cowsheds dotted in between luxury chalets, restaurants and boutiques. The Allalinhorn Glacier which sits above the village is open for skiing from July, giving it one of the longest ski seasons in the world.

Access

Saas Fee is just a 1.5hr drive from Sion and 2.5hrs from Geneva. As it’s a car-free village, some prefer getting the train to Visp then hopping on the Postbus to town. Transfer times are 2 hrs from Milan and 2.5 hrs from Basel and Geneva.

Winter

Sitting at 1800m, and with skiing up to 3600m, reliable snow cover is pretty much guaranteed. Flat, sunny slopes provide plenty of opportunities for beginners to progress and intermediate skiers are well catered for with fabulous descents from the top of Allalin and around the Plattjen area. More experienced skiers can tackle the powdery slopes of Langfluh but off-piste exploration is limited thanks to the crevasses around the glacier. The Saas-Fee ski pass includes the whole valley with the slopes in Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen –and makes for some excellent ski touring. There is also an increasingly integrated reciprocal agreement with nearby Zermatt, which may be worth considering for those who are in Saas-Fee for a longer stay. Off the slopes, Hannig Mountain is where you will find walking, snowshoeing, paragliding and tobogganing. The Aqua Allalin Leisure Centre has an indoor pool & tennis court, and Saas Fee is also home to the world’s biggest ice cave, Eispavillion. The tourist office organizes walking tours every week and the local brewery regularly hosts tours and tasting sessions.

Summer

Summer in Saas Fee has it all – extreme mountain biking, climbing, access to some of the Alps most famous 4000m peaks for those keen mountaineers, over 350km of stunning hikes and last but certainly not least, summer skiing on the Allalinhorn glacier. A true dual-season resort, Saas Fee is just as lively in the summer as it is in the winter, much of this is due to the glacier which hosts the ski race teams of a number of countries as they prepare for the winter.
