Canada’s answer to the rugged mining town of Jackson Hole, Fernie is the laid back ski resort true powderhounds dream of. Located 3 miles from the actual town of Fernie, the resort has some of the best snow in Canada (a national average of nearly 9 metres), minimal grooming and epic terrain, and is a must visit for every snow lover.

Access

A 1 hour drive from Canadian Rockies International Airport and 3 hours from Calgary International Airport.

Winter

Fernie has plenty of wide open runs that are perfect for beginners and intermediates to start on, but it is the chutes and the trees that most people come here for. Five massive powder-filled bowls are easily accessed by (sometimes slow) but always queue-free chairlifts and the tree runs at the top of Siberia Ridge will challenge even the most advanced riders. The off-piste is easy to explore and there are plenty of great lines no more than a 40 minute hike away from the main lifts that are easy to see and navigate. If you are looking for a lively apres scene, Fernie wouldn’t be the most obvious choice, but heading into Fernie village on the regular shuttle will provide you with more nightlife options.

Summer

Whether you like to hike, bike, climb, fish or swim Fernie has something for you – and then some. Home to some of the most varied downhilling and cross-country tracks in Canada, you can ride a brand new trail here every single day of the summer. The hiking and backpacking is great for everyone for beginners to experts, and those looking to just go for a few hours or a few days. On the Elk River you can find some great kayaking, and the best flyfishing in the region, and if none of this takes your fancy, the golf course is one of the most beautiful in the country.
